Iowa goes to Orange Bowl

It had appeared that that Iowa Hawkeyes were heading to the Fiesta Bowl after a fantastic 10-2 season.  Fiesta officials had previously indicated they would love to have the Hawks and would probably match them up with Boise St. — assuming Nebraska or somebody else would not screw it up.
However, the desire to pit the [...]

Defense with a Capital D

It always seems like the offense steals the headlines.  When history reflects on the 2009 Iowa Hawkeyes, it will be the defense that people should remember.
Iowa shut out Minnesota on Saturday afternoon at Kinnick Stadium, winning 12-0 on Senior Day, retaining Floyd of Rosedale, and finishing the regular season at 10-2.
The Hawkeyes did not win [...]

It’s gonna be a long season for Hawkeye Hoops

Two games into the 2009-2010 season and Hawkeye fans are already looking forward to spring football.  What is this — Nebraska?
Iowa is 0-2 in men’s basketball.  The Hawks looked miserable in their first 2 games — losses to Texas San Antonio and Duquesne.  At HOME!  This has not happened since 1962!
The fact of the matter [...]

What a win for Iowa

For the first time ever, Iowa is 8-0.
It did not come easy for the Hawkeyes.  Nor it should it.  Ricky Stanzi threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Marvin McNutt as time expired to give Iowa a come from behind 15-13 win over Michigan St. on Saturday night.
Some skeptics will once again say that Iowa was [...]

Monday’s Random Thoughts (on Tuesday)

A few weeks ago, after Briar Cliff lost to Midland Lutheran down in Fremont, NE, Head Coach Tom Rethman turned to me and JB and said as he was walking out of the press box that he was close.  He was meaning that Briar Cliff was close to putting things together and actually winning a [...]

Turnovers help Iowa stay unbeaten

Three fumbles, 2 interceptions and 1 victory.  That was the story on Saturday night as #12 Iowa forced 5 turnovers and survived a scare beating Michigan 30-28 at Kinnick Stadium.
Iowa’s defense bent but did not completely break.  Michigan was able to run the football — at will at times.  The Wolverines finished with 195 yards [...]

Some good, Some bad in Iowa’s win

It wasn’t pretty.  In fact, in some ways, it was downright ugly.  However, the Iowa Hawkeyes gave Kirk Ferentz his first ever 5-0 start as head coach in a 24-21 win over Arkansas St. Saturday at Kinnick Stadium.
For awhile, Iowa looked like they would blow out the Red Wolves, scoring 2 touchdowns on their first [...]

Monday’s Random Thoughts

College football continues to be a little crazy this season.  Or it may just be the fact that the pollsters do not know how to rank the teams in the pre-season.  Ole Miss, Penn St., and Cal all lost this week and all three were in the top 6 in the nation.  All three lost [...]

Iowa Clobbers Penn St.

So much for the white out.
The Iowa Hawkeyes proved that they are a football team to be reckoned with in 2009 as Kirk Ferentz led his bunch into Happy Valley and beat Penn St. 21-10 on Saturday night.
It was picture perfect victory for the Hawks, who won the game thanks to a dominating defensive line [...]

Random Thoughts

So much to talk about, I have to do another random thought segment.  This might just turn into a weekly thing every Monday.
Iowa looked really good on Saturday.  I did not realize that Arizona had such a good offense but the Hawkeyes do have a good defense.  The Wildcats did not score an offensive touchdown [...]
