A few weeks ago, after Briar Cliff lost to Midland Lutheran down in Fremont, NE, Head Coach Tom Rethman turned to me and JB and said as he was walking out of the press box that he was close. He was meaning that Briar Cliff was close to putting things together and actually winning a [...]

College football continues to be a little crazy this season. Or it may just be the fact that the pollsters do not know how to rank the teams in the pre-season. Ole Miss, Penn St., and Cal all lost this week and all three were in the top 6 in the nation. All three lost [...]

So much to talk about, I have to do another random thought segment. This might just turn into a weekly thing every Monday.
Iowa looked really good on Saturday. I did not realize that Arizona had such a good offense but the Hawkeyes do have a good defense. The Wildcats did not score an offensive touchdown [...]

We just had our first full week of football. That is high school, college and pro in the same weekend. Here’s a few observations:
The favorite to win the MRAC right now is East. The Black Raiders nearly upset Indianola last Thursday, only losing in overtime. I have to give Bob Goodvin a ton of credit [...]

When was the last time that the Briar Cliff Chargers dominated a football game from start to finish? Certainly it had not happened in the Tom Rethman era — until Saturday night. The Chargers played their first night game in school history and shutdown the Dana Vikings 23-0.
It was not 100 percent perfect. The offense [...]

How often do we ignore special teams? Maybe ignore is not the right word. Maybe its forget instead. On Saturday, Briar Cliff forgot how to play special teams and it cost the Chargers a victory. Grand View beat BCU 27-21 at Memorial Field in the opening game of the season.
The Cliff was trailing 20-7 in [...]

2008 was a great year in sports. We saw one of the greatest Super Bowl’s of all time with a big upset. Kansas won a thrilling championship game at the Men’s Final Four. Tiger Woods won one of the most dramatic U.S. Open golf tournaments of all time. It was a great baseball season but [...]

When you saw the final score of Saturday’s game between Morningside and Briar Cliff, you probably had a “shock and awe” type of feeling. How could any team lose 73-8? Was Briar Cliff that bad or was Mornginside that good?
Truth be told, it was not a very fun game to watch, broadcast, or maybe listen [...]

Besides a serious injury, what is the one thing that you do not want to see on a football field? The answer is poor sportsmanship. Blowouts are part of the game. They happen. And they happen quite frequently. When the game is clearly decided, the winning team must be gracious in victory and not rub [...]
