Random Thoughts from this Weekend

For the first time in awhile, I was able to just sit at home and watch sports.  No more games to broadcast.  No trips to make.  Nowhere to go.  I got a chance to just sit back and be a fan.  Here’s some of what I saw:
Tiger Woods is something special.  I am just glad [...]

Should Lickliter Leave?

15-17.
That’s the record for the Iowa Hawkeyes this past season.  No NCAA.  No NIT.  No post-season whatsoever.  No real exciting wins this year.  Pretty much no excitement at all.
Now, however, we have some interesting developments over the last week or so.  It seems that the flock is jumping ship and leaving quickly.  Jermain Davis is [...]

NAIA Recap

I know it wrapped up on Tuesday but it has taken me a couple of days to catch up on some sleep and digest a week’s worth of basketball at the NAIA Division II National Championship at the Tyson Events Center.
I serve on the tournament committee and I have treasured every moment of the 12 [...]

Is Heelan the best team in the state?

Ever since Iowa decided to split up their high schools, there is an argument every year on who has the best team in each individual sport.  I think that argument is more prevelant in basketball than any other sport.  A 1A basketball team is probably closer to a 4A basketball team in terms of overall [...]

Heelan moves to the 3A Finals

The Heelan Crusaders have accomplished quite a lot during the 2008-2009 school year.  Their football team played for a state title.  Their girls basketball team played for a state title.  Now, their boys basketball team will do the same.
Heelan pounded Carroll 71-52 on Thursday night to move into Saturday’s final game at 6:05.   Heelan shot a blistering [...]

East falls to Bettendorf

The Cinderella slipper did not fit on East’s foot.  The Black Raiders fell to Bettendorf 55-41 in the first round of the 4A Iowa Boys Basketball tournament in Des Moines on Wednesday.
East started off shooting poorly, got better in the third quarter, but fell off in the 4th quarter.
East trailed 14-9 after the first quarter [...]

Heelan easily moves on

The Heelan Crusaders had no troubles with New Hampton in the first round of the 3A Boys State Tournament in Des Moines on Tuesday.  Heelan led by as many as 40 and won 69-36.
Zach McCabe led the way with 17 points and Brennan Cougill put in 15 points as the Crusaders didn’t even play their [...]

NAIA Tournament Preview

If you’re not going down to the boys state basketball tournament this week to see Heelan or East, maybe you should check out the NAIA Women’s Division II National Championship at the Tyson Events Center.  32 teams will be in Sioux City this week, competing for a national championship.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the [...]

North moves into the 4A Championship

The North Stars will be playing for their 2nd state title in 3 years on Saturday night.  North earned that right after beating Cedar Raipids Kennedy 78-72 on Friday afternoon.
This was a great basketball game, from beginning to end.  Sometimes, state tournament games can be so boring.  Or maybe tentative is the better word.  Teams [...]

Tritz leads Heelan back to the finals

Carli Tritz is pretty good.
Tritz took over the game on Thursday night, scoring 20 points and the Heelan Crusaders will return to the 3A state finals, beating Pella 45-32 at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
It was a low scoring game for three quarters but both teams picked up the pace in the final [...]
