It wasn’t easy but East beat North for the third time this season, topping the Stars 71-66 in the substate semifinals on Friday night. The Black Raiders will play either West or Abe Lincoln next week for the right to go to the state tourney.

It’s official. The 3A substate final between the Heelan Crusaders and the MOC-Floyd Valley Dutchmen has been moved.
Instead of Tuesday, March 3, the game will be played on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:30 pm. The game will still be at the Tyson Events Center.

Heelan Head Coach Tom Betz realized that the Le Mars Bulldogs did not have anybody that could handle Crusader Senior Brennan Cougill. The future Iowa Hawkeye scored 31 points and forced 2 Bulldogs to foul out and Heelan pulled away from Le Mars 74-56. The win moves Heelan into a substate final against MOC-Floyd Valley.

No upset on Tuesday night; Jalyssa Caesar made sure of that.

It was over before it started.
Heelan scored the game’s first 17 points and the Crusaders easily defeated Storm Lake 80-31 on Monday night in the first round of district action at the Pit.

East Head Coach Dan Pomerenke was hoping his team would give North somewhat of a test in the regional semfinals on Saturday night. They didn’t.

Things haven’t been extremely rosey this last week for the East boys’ basketball team but the Black Raiders did beat North on Friday night 72-65 at the East gym.

In January, Heelan probably overlooked the Black Raiders before playing 4A #1 Marion Linn-Mar and stumbled into a loss against their arch-rival. On Tuesday night despite losing 4 players to suspension, Heelan didn’t over look East this time.
